Noise Induced Hearing Loss – One of the most common occupational diseases

Noise, next to aging, is the most common reason for hearing loss. More and more Canadians at younger ages are suffering from hearing loss most often caused by noise. Nearly 1 out of 4 adult Canadians reported that they are suffering from hearing loss. This can happen either rapidly if exposed to an extremely loud sound for a short period of time, such as a rock concert, or gradually when exposed to a moderately loud sound repeatedly such as ongoing noises at the workplace.

Occupational noise induced hearing loss is a serious issue and some people are more at risk than others depending on the occupation.

Here are some general signs that show your hearing is at risk while at work:

  • Raising your voice when talking to someone at an arm’s length away
  • Ringing in your ears after leaving work
  • Temporary hearing loss after working

It is important to not only be aware of the actual sound levels you are exposed to, but also for how long. Exposure to over 85 decibels over an 8 hour work day is considered to be hazardous. This sound level can be compared to a handsaw, blender or heavy traffic.

Noise induced hearing loss unfortunately is permanent, but it is also 100% preventable. If a work environment is reported to be too noisy the goal is to reduce the noise source and if this isn’t possible to provide the right tools to protect the hearing. To ensure comfort and best protection in the workplace we suggest to get custom hearing protection fitted to the individual ear.

To minimize the risk of permanent hearing loss it is important to check the hearing regularly on an annual basis. To learn more about how we can help you monitor your hearing, watch our video or call us directly at 250.766.0294.
