People with untreated hearing loss are more likely to suffer from depression, anxiety, and paranoia!

It is no secret that untreated hearing loss has severe consequences; not only on communication but on physical, emotional and mental health. Quality of life can be adversely affected in the face of untreated hearing loss including relations at home and work, self confidence, general feelings of oneself and one’s social life.

We, as human beings have a fundamental need for inclusion in groups and close relationships. Research strongly suggests that people with hearing loss often feel isolated from their family and friends due to constant communication difficulty.

It is no surprise that those with hearing loss experience a much higher rate of depression, anxiety, and overall decreased well-being due to communication breakdowns and ultimately social disengagement. This becomes a vicious cycle when the poor communication leads to feeling isolated, resulting in withdrawal from conversation and social engagement which in turn results in more poor communication.
Social Isolation, elderly sitting on bench imageThose with untreated hearing loss are less likely to participate in social activities compared to those who wear hearing aids.  Statistics show that 66% of those over the age of 70 have hearing loss, yet only 25% of that population has hearing aids. This large population is at risk for cognitive decline, faster aging and social isolation. Frank Lin M.D., PhD. of John Hopkins University notes that the Geriatric research literature has shown that one of the most important determinants of morbidity, heart attacks, dementia, and hospitalization in older adults is loneliness. He notes that there is a direct biological response through loneliness that leads to many downstream outcomes.

The American Academy of Audiology notes that hearing aid users reported significant improvements in many areas of their lives, ranging from their relationships at home and sense of independence to their social life and sense of safety. In virtually every dimension measured, the families of hearing aid users also noted the improvements but were even more likely than the users to report improvements.

Recently, there have been incredible improvements in hearing aid technology to facilitate better communication in all situations, including group conversations. Learn more by calling Lakeside Hearing at 250-766-0294 for a demonstration to see how your life can improve with better hearing.
